Rural homelessness – like homelessness across the UK – is on the rise. In fact, between late 2018 and September 2019, it rose by 85%.
This spike in homelessness is just one of the housing challenges facing rural communities across Britain. 170,000 families were waiting for social housing in rural authorities as of September 2019, 17,000 of which were recognised as homeless. At the current rate of social housing building, it will take 130 years to house them all.
At a SERA event in Brighton, Lois Lane (Housing Campaigns Officer at Campaign to Protect Rural England) outlines the scale of the challenges facing rural housing authorities and discusses how to build sustainably for the future.
