In recent elections, the climate crisis has crept its way further and further up the agenda – now, the majority of people polled in the UK say that climate policy is a key deciding factor in who they vote for. In November 2019, the European Parliament declared a climate emergency and announced goals for cutting emissions and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. It is unclear whether a post-Brexit Britain would adopt the same aims.
Mike Buckley is the Director of ‘Remain & Reform’. His job is to campaign to stop Brexit and reform the European Union from within. Speaking at the SERA event in Brighton, he explained why, as he sees it, reversing the 2016 EU referendum result is essential to tackling the climate crisis in the UK. Central to his argument is the concern that Brexit is eating up valuable time – time that, if we are to be in with even a 50/50 chance of preventing the global temperature rising above 1.5 degrees, we cannot afford to waste.
