Recent studies have shown a significant link between fracking and rising methane emissions in the US. According the Environmental Defense Fund, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide and “far more devastating to the climate”. The link between fracking and methane emissions therefore puts paid to the misconception that fracked gases are a more sustainable energy source than other fossil fuels once and for all.
Andy Gheorghiu, climate campaigner and Policy Advisor to Food & Water Europe, discussed the science behind fracking’s effect on the climate at a SERA event in Brighton and called for an end to fracking and the petrochemical and plastics industry.
